Allegra is the brand name for fexofenadine. It is sold in 30-mg, 60-mg and 180-mg peach, oblong tablets. Some pharmacies also carry a 60-mg white/pink capsule. Allegra can be bought in both blister packs and bottles of 30-, 60- and 90-day supplies.
A combination form of Allegra, called Allegra-D, can also be bought. Allegra-D is a combination of the antihistamine in Allegra and a decongestant for added relief from a stuffy nose. The decongestant found in Allegra is pseudoephedrine. This medication has 60 mg of Allegra and 120 mg of pseudoephedrine.
How to Find the Right Dose
A doctor is always the best person to decide which dose is right based on an individual's current health status, body type and age. Most adults and children older than age 12 who have nasal allergies take the once-daily form of Allegra, which is the 180-mg dose. Another option is to take 60 mg twice a day. People who find their symptoms returning at bedtime may find this to be an effective alternative.
Children who have nasal allergies and are between the ages of 6 and 11 should take a 30-mg tablet twice a day.
For treatment of CIU, adults and children older than age 12 should take 60 mg twice a day. Children between the ages of 6 and 11 should take 30 mg twice a day.
